If you’ve got effects and animation on a layer, sure, you hold Alt (windows of course) while the layer you want to replace has already been selected and drag the asset from the bin over top of the layer and it replaces it. But some items aren’t “footage” in the bin, like text or shapes.

I’ve got quite a few text objects that are Actually illustrator layers. I did it that way because I had a graphic designer working on the actual look of the text while I was working on the video. Now that stage is done, and they are giving me Lots of changes, so I would much rather have the text inside of AE. But since you can’t convert Ai to text (from what I have found so far), I would just send over the text using the Overlord plugin, and then I have a text in AE, in the correct position and scale.

But I’d love to know if there is a way to replace one layer with another, from within the same composition. Because I’m using effects, the layer has animation, and it has a layer track matte. Yeah, that’s not a huge deal if you are only doing it once or twice, but I’ll have to do this about 40 times.

The only solution I could think of is to precomp each of them, then replace it with the precomp. But then to edit them I have to go into the additional composition. There’s no un-pre-compose is there?
