    Hi,

Do any of you gus know why this might be happening? I have a complex effects sequence that’s comprised of many layers, I want to import lots of different shots in to this layer structure and use it again at different times throughout the composition, but a lot of the time AE can’t seem to load new footage in to the sequence. When I select the original and chose replace footage, the new footage name appears on all the correct layers, but the preview screen just go’s blank 🙁

So, one thing I noticed is that the replacement footage has to be the same resolution or the masks in the sequence go in to odd arrangments, also the length of the the footage seems to play a part in this. But I checked that the replacement footage was the same resolution and length, which it was, still no luck. . . .

What else could be causing this, AE seems to regognise there’s different footage in the comp to that which was used to create it even if I switch the name on the files. . . .

    ?

    Regards Richie.

First, save your project using Increment and Save.
Now you’re working on a duplicate and you can always go back to your original.

Debugging AE’s more complex media management is usually a case of user error, simply not understanding the practical limits. You have discovered many of the gotchas on your own but they are all spelled out in the manual. Now that you have some practical experience, the manual’s often less than crystal clear explanations might be easier to understand.

When you say the canvas “goes blank” do you mean the whole project goes to black or just the layers you’re trying to replace?
Try stepping through the comp one frame at a time till your layers disappear. Once you find that location, start turning off and soloing layers one at a time till you get some reaction that starts to make some sense to you.

I’ll narrow it down and try and crack it.

It’s probably the file size that has to match, seems to only be happening with Zwrks 3D warps.

    No probs.
