  • Repeated Q: Laptop for Video & Photo editing

    Hi again,
Circumstances require that I use a PC (not Mac) Laptop (as opposed to a good, fast, superior desktop job.)
In two weeks I’ll be ordering one, and of course as you well know, high speed (for editing) is crucial, as is a good screen, for High Definition video, and photos. Battery life is not important, nor is weight. Decent (high volume) sound is desirable.
Staying under (hopefully well under) a $1200 budget, I would appreciate two or three makes and models to check.
    Many thanks in advance,
    John

I have found some really good deals in re-certified machines from Newegg.com
For instance they have this listed:

    TOSHIBA Qosmio X505-Q894B NoteBook Intel Core i7 740QM(1.73GHz) 18.4″ 4GB (up to 8GB) Memory DDR3 1066 500GB HDD 7200rpm BD Combo NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M

    Looks pretty good for $1100.

I have not had any problems yet from them and I’ve bought 3-4 refurb deals.

Any refurbished Alienware or Asus gaming laptops will do the trick as well. I purchased an Alienware 17″ laptop for video editing and have never looked back.

    Thank you, Dave.
I am leery of “refurbished” but if the price gap is big….
Where do you recommend buying such items? (Didn’t DELL buy out Alienware?)

Yeah, Dell bought out Alienware and has improved it.

You can buy Alienware machines directly from Dell’s website.

There are places too which allow you to buy and customize Alienware machines. One such place which is good (and also ships internationally) is https://www.hidevolution.com

    Good luck!

I have been using an HP for the past few years with great results.
One big advantage is that the 17 model has 2 internal drives. I have been been dual booting….running snow leopard on one and windows 7 on the other. Now they have i7 processors at a reasonable price.
