Still ramping up on FCP, but experienced editor looking for some help. The majority of my work is shot on 35mm, then transfered to Digi Beta. I am working stricly standard def on FCP 4.5.

I have always been able to “paint out” film dust specs and scratches with a built in paint program in my AVID|DS or using Ani-Matte in Composer. You know the exercise. Go to frame with spec and either grab a reference frame before or after, and paint in place. Or pick relative or absolute position from section
within the same frame. Specs can normal be fixed with a soft-round brush, but scratches usually require
free-hand draw or splined shape tool.

As far as I can tell, there is no filter native to FCP to help me. Can anyone reccommend a 3rd party paint program or plug-in that could accomplish this.

    Thanks for any assistance.

[tricky ricky] “with a built in paint program in my AVID|DS or using Ani-Matte in Composer”

That is a multi-$1000 option on Avid as I recall.

I have done a clean-up in FCP by adding a video layer above the primary track and putting a “previous” or “later” frame than the “damaged” one directly over it.
You can use a garbage matte or similar on the upper clip to mask out the offending mark(s).

Or export to Photoshop and clone it out.
(You can export/import a series of frames to do this, if necessary.)

Thanks Arnie. That clone plug in is EXACTLY what I am looking for.

perhaps you could just donate all that dust and scratched to someone who’s trying to make their DV look more like film. People pay all kinds of money to get decent dust and scratches in their video and here you are trying to get rid of them!

Ironic, isn’t it? The people who actually manufacture film have spent over a century trying to get rid of grain & other artifacts, & we vidiots are trying to put them back!!
