  • Repairing dodgy audio, can’t hear the lead singers voice

Posted by Dave Sullivan on May 26, 2005 at 9:06 pm

    Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can help. I recorded a gig this week, I set the audio levels, and everything looked fine. It wasn’t ideal, but I used the PD-150s mike.
I started to edit the footage this morning, and the audio is in pretty bad shape, let me explain….I can hear all of the instrument, but the lead singers vocals are very faint.
I’ve tried several filters, and I’ve been able to pull the vocals up in the mix a bit, but they could be better.
And now to the point of the question….could any of you guys give me some advice on which filter I could use to make the vocals clearer. Also does anyone know of a program that I could use to enhance the audio.
I need to get the video done for Monday, and as its a new client I want to make this project look and sound as good as it can.
    Many thanks in advance

    Dave

    Double check you output,
It sounds like you have something wired out of phase.

    Hello David,

Many thanks for your post. I’ve checked my cables, ie: Speakers, I’ve panned the two mono channels so that audio 1 is left, and audio 2 is to the right.
I captured the video into the mac using a DSR-25, and checked the audio levels while capturing the video. The lead singer sounds a bit like Sting, so he has a very good vocal range, which doesn’t help.
Could you please give me a bit of advice on how to find out if the audio is out of phase.
    Many thanks again

    Dave

I’ve used the 3 band EQ on both channels, but no joy as yet.

I have heard wonderfull things about the new SoundtrackPro; it supposedly acts like a ProTools type program that can allow you to really optimize your audio. By chance do you have the new production suite & have tried this out yet?
