  • renders are much darker when viewed outside of c4d

    Posted by Mark Price on January 28, 2011 at 3:31 am

    Everytime i render out an animation it is much darker once i view it in an application outside of c4d due to the color space and luma setting c4d uses. i know i could just boost the lighting with in the scene or fix in color correction that adds another step and creates more problems. Is there a setting with in the render engine that allows you to do this as you render?

    i know that when i go to after effects that i can change the settings in ae and then i can view the renders as i saw them in c4d.

    i have my render setting set to the pre sets for hdtv 1080 with global illumination saving them to tiff files then creating a image sequence of them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you for your time.

    You’re probably rendering to linear color space which has a gamma of 1, whereas other software generally defaults to a gamma of 2.2.

    Right is there a way to change that within the render settings? i looked but i didn’t see where i could do that.

    in my project settings my color profile was set to srgb there is an option for linear color but i feel like it should be more of an output option.
    when i selected the linear color profile it made everything brighter in c4d rendering something out now to test. Is this where you can change it adam?

    It’s a bit complicated and I’d be lying if I said that I fully understand color management, but here’s what I know:

    * It’s best to keep a full linear workflow until you reach the end of your production process. In Cinema you get a much more realistic light falloff with linear workflow which can improve image quality substantially. In post linear workflow gives you more latitude to make adustments without clipping color values;

    * By default Cinema saves to srgb color space, non-linear output. If you want linear output you have to specify it in the render>save options;

    * If your output looks dark in another application it’s probably because color management is turned off. It should be set to srgb to match Cinema’s output, and srgb linear if you output linear color from Cinema;

    * In after effects you set the color space by clicking the button to the right of the new composition icon at the bottom of the project panel (by default it says 8 bpc);

    * There’s some useful information in the Cinema help docs about all this, including settings for compositing apps other than AE. Search for “linear color”.

    Hi Adam

    I have the same problem, although I’m rendering a multipass still image. I guess your fix works great for the “Regular Image” where you can change the colour space – but there isn’t an option to do that in the “Multi-Pass Image” tab. Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance
