  • Rendering to Widescreen???

Posted by Kishan Patel on March 10, 2008 at 4:44 am

I have recorded a clip in widescreen mode and have inserted it into AE. I have set the itepret film to wide screen mode and the composition settings to also wide screen mode. When the clip is in AE it is wide screen. When I go to render the clip however – I set the options to either movie for Windows or Quick Time and both times they have been set to the streach setting where there is the wide screen option…but everytime i render it comes out being a sqaure ration.

What must I do in order to make it render widescreen?

    Hey,

If you ‘captured’ your footage wide screen, after effect will see it is wide screen. By wide screen you mean 16/9 format?
Just drag your clip in the composition icon and everything will be alright.
When you render out, and leave everything how it is. It will do it ok.
But it could be that for example if you have pal widescreen. The view window will show you a none wide screen view.

You must click on the square button on the right. It switches between wide and non-wide.

For now the only thing i’ve been using for editing is Windows movie maker and it there it comes up as square still, idk why but it just wont come out wide.

Do you see any problem using Windows Movie Maker?

It doesnt happen in the view screen- only when I render it out and open it in windows media player or in widows movie maker (the editing program i am currently using) it still comes out as square

    Any idea why?

Windows Movie Maker is a piece of rubbish that was never meant to be used for serious video editing. It has very limited capabilities compared to “real” editing software, such as Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas, etc.

    Hi Kishan,

I’m not sure, but this could be related to the same problem I was having. When I burned DVD’s of my Rendered After Effects footage, what looked Widescreen in AE turned into Full screen “stretched” on my TV.

What worked for me was going into my comp settings in After Effects. Where it said 720 x 480, I changed to 856 x 480.

Stretch your footage to fit the new comp dimensions and hopefully you’ll be good to go.

I’m not sure if this is the proper way, but it worked for me.

If you are going HD your numbers might be different but the ratio should be the same.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Dave,

I’m not sure what the problem was. I could take widescreen footage straight from my editor “pinnacle studio”, burn a DVD and it would be fine. Put that same footage in After Effects, then render it out and it wouldn’t burn in widescreen.

As far as I could tell, I didn’t have an option when burning to change it… I might just not have seen it however.
