  • Rendering in FCP vs. Premiere

I am testing out Adobe Premiere 5.5. The first thing I noticed is when I add a filter or effect (from a third party like Sapphire eg.), Premiere plays it back without needing rendering!! But in FCP, every stinking little thing I do has to be rendered. My Sequence/footage settings are correct, so basic playback doesn’t require rendering. But it’s when I add effects that FCP becomes an exercise of watching a progress bar 90 percent of the time.

I thought FCP, especially v. 7, which is what I’m using (FCP Studio 3), allowed you to view clips without having to render them? FCP X does, Adobe does, but not FCP 7. Are my settings wrong, or is this simply how the software works? Is there something I can change?

Only certain FXPlug effects in FCP 7 don’t require rendering to view. And they depend on the graphic card you use. But Adobe has ALWAYS been better about filters and rendering…

I was afraid you were going to say that. Maybe it’s time to leap over to Premiere for good….
