I wold like to create lowish rez preview files for giving people rough cuts. I have plaid around with various setting but whatever I do I get black stripes top or bottom (in the preview image during rendeding so it not just the monitor I am playing back in being slightly wrong ration). I am using Saoy AVC codec. Anyone got and advice for what setting I should use?

Using Sony AVC with any of the Internet 16:9 templates should match HD complete without any black bars.

    Hi Ben,
Try Video4YouTube free plug-in for such rendering tasks.
It also use Sony AVC and you can select from 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p resolutions. (If you are not using YouTube, just uncheck the Upload option). It also automatically match your project to the selected output format.

    Best regards.
