I’m attempting to render a fairly short (5 min) clip of .dv footage to .AVI, using Vegas Pro 9.0. The render begins, and watching Task Manager, the CPU usage spikes to about 80% and then immediately falls off to around 4% – all within the first 5 seconds or so. Then, it just hangs, and the Approximate Time field in the Vegas rendering status dialog just continues to increase. Pressing “Cancel” will not stop the render – the only way I could shut down Vegas was to Logoff.

There are no effects applied to the clip, other than a dissolve at the beginning and end.

The identical piece of footage renders without issue in Vegas 8.0.

Just for elimination sake, have you removed the dissolve at the beginning and tried again?

What flavor of avi are you rendering to? Remember, avi is just a wrapper that can contain any assorted sundry of codec inside.
