    Ive recorded with my Canon 60D at 720p 60fps. I forgot to change settings and there are some clips i have no intention of slowing it down.

    My normal workflow would just to Import the clips into Sony Vegas Pro 12, drag onto timeline, do whatever effects, then rendering it to .m2t 1080p 24fps (I also had some 1080p clips). But I think the point is that the 60fps footage looks choppy and when pausing during movement, you see a ghosting effect/strobe look.

    Rendering the 720p footage alone to its match settings which is HD 720p 60fps YUV.avi thru clips are clean even when paused during excessive movement.

    The shutter speed on my camera was 1/125.

    Is it possible to have 60fps footage render cleanly to 24fps for the film look?

    The final video will be uploaded onto YouTube, with the possibility of bring on tv, but let’s focus on YouTube for now. If this is possible, what are the necessary settings to get clean 60fps to 24fps footage?

    I’ve tried rendering it to other formats. They all look the same and undesirable compared to the matched .avi HD 720p 60fps. Again i don’t want it at 60fps. Id like the film look of 24fps.

    Try disableing resample on all of the events. That will remove the ghosting caused by frame blending of 60 fps down to 24 fps.

    Cleanly yes… not choppy… that depends on how you shot the footage. You can’t swing a camera around at 24p and expect to get smooth video. Likewise you can’t reduce 60p from a camera that was panned too quickly and get smooth 24p. You need to shoot different at 24p. Unless you kept this in mind while shooting, you may be out of luck. That’s why you should always shoot 24p if you plan to deliver 24p.

    Disable Resample in the Event Properties for every event.

    Could shooting 60fps be the “safe way” of recording considering that it could be solved by disabling the resampling like you described?

    Not really because your motion might not be smooth. Try panning across a picket fence at 24 fps. At some point the image will start to be jumpy. That’s because the pan is too fast for 24 fps to capture smooth motion. The solution is to pan slower and you can see this in the viewfinder if you’re shooting at 24 fps. If you do the same thing at 60 fps, you’ll see that you can pan a lot faster and still get smooth motion. It will look great in the viewfinder. Then you disable sample and render to 24 fps and find out that the pan was too fast and the 24 fps looks jumpy. This is why you want to shoot at 24 fps, so that you can trust what the viewfinder is showing will be what your final motion will look like.

    Yup.

    There are a few problems with converting 60p to 24p. Let’s look at the basic issue of “jumpiness”.

    When you shoot at 24p, for a normal cinematic look, you would normally want to use, in film terms, a 180-degree shutter. Classic cameras use a rotating shutter, and you would set the shutter speed as a fraction of a full 360 degree rotation, one rotation per frame.

    So this is, of course, 1/48th of a second for 24p. This is why pro video cameras often include neutral density filters. Much of what folks recognize as “the film look” will be the degree of motion blur you’ll typically see within that 1/48th window. When you select frames shot a 1/125th second, the best you’ll get is the look of 24p shot at 1/125th second, which is going to look very stuttery on fast motion.

    Only, it’s not quite even that look, because 60fps doesn’t map evenly into 24p. Your choices are to not blend, as John suggested, which gets you single 60p frames mapped into 24p, but not at an even cadence, since you have 2.5 frames at 60p per single frame at 24p. Or you blend (and there are some plug-ins which may do a better job than Vegas’s built-in bending algorithms) which will take 2, 3, or 2.5 (one frame weighted less in the blend) to deliver each 24p frame. This can restore something that hints more at a longer exposure, which may help, but it can also work out unfortunately, particularly on fast motion.
