  • Rendered something with subtitles but subtitles didn’t come through

Posted by Amanda Duff on December 4, 2010 at 5:01 am

Normally when I render something that has subtitles into vegas, the subtitles come through on top of the video strip (so they are part of the picture) which is fine, no problem there. however with this ONE disc (others are fine) , the show plays with subtitles on computer and on dvd player, but when I render it, there are none there, not on the picture at all. Is there a setting I am missing?
    thanks

I’m a little lost in your description. Please describe what you have, what programs you’ve used and what you are trying to accomplish.

Yea, I’m really confused too. Vegas doesn’t have the ability to superimpose subtitles on the preview window or a rendered file so I don’t see how it could have worked before and is not working now.

    ok sorry.
i am in australia, pal tv system.
someone has copied an old CAPTIONED educational show (probably from a vhs tape) and put it onto dvd through a video/dvd recording machine.
so when i watch it, there are subtitles immediately, they don’t turn off. Now I need to pull out part of that video (its about 75 mins long and teacher wants 35 mins) for the student to watch along with other things either side. It’s no longer available for sale and all licensing issues have been dealt with (comes under Disability Rights).
If I play the dvd in my dvd recorder, then dub it, the show copies without subtitles.
If I render the dvd, the show comes up without subtitles.
If I bring it directly into Architect, it comes in without subtitles.

I’m confused, maybe I haven’t done it before.
either way, I don’t need to fiddle with any captions, I just want them on there otherwise I have to re-caption and I already have 20 hours of captioning waiting.

So bottom line is, I need 30 mins out of this dvd, I can watch it with captions but when I dub or render , the captions are not there. It’s from something very old (probably vhs tape) and I don’t want to have to re-caption.

    Thank you,

The problem is that captions are created in the DVD player itself. Even DVD player software on your PC. They are never really on the video which is why when you capture the video they are not there.

The only way to capture them it via analog capture. To do this, you would need to connect your DVD player outputs to an analog-to-digital converter like the Canopus ADVC-110 or ADVC-55 and capture the analog output from the player just as it would send it to your TV. Then you would get the captions.
