Render Widescreen Video to 4×3; Text Overlaps Letterbox
Using Vegas 8.0 Pro, I’m working on a NTSC widescreen project. All the footage is widescreen. I’ve created a ProType Titler effect where 3 lines of text fly in one line at a time, from off-screen top. Then using track motion, the whole screen of type flies down, off-screen bottom.
When I render this out as DV NTSC (not widescreen), the letterbox bars at the top and bottom appear correctly. The text flies in correctly, however, when it flies out, it goes OVER the bottom letterbox bar.
Any ideas why? I figure my work-around would be to render the avi as widescreen, then re-render as DV NTSC.

I noticed something similar a few years ago when I was creating a video montage in widescreen from jpeg’s. almost all the jpeg’s I would apply Match Aspect Ratio to so I could pan or crop the area I wanted to 16:9. However, ones that were 4:3 but that I didn’t want to crop, and just left as-is, I found when rendered to a 4:3 letterboxed project, actually filled the 4:3 screen.
I think the same thing is happening to you, where the text media’s frame hasn’t changed to 16:9 so when it renders as 4:3 it automatically utilizes the whole area, ending up different than when you’re working on it in 16:9. Check the Event Pan/Crop for your text media and see if it all is in 16:9. Since you mentioned it comes into frame properly but leaves outside the border, perhaps you have it matching 16:9 at the opening keyframe but the ending keyframe is still in 4:3?

This is happening because the aspect of DV and DV Widescreen are different. If you want to see exactly what is happening, change your project to DV for a second and view the text. You will see that when in DV mode, the black bars are really part of the DV frame and track motion will gladly composite the text over the bars since they are a valid part of the video in DV mode.
The workaround is to use Pan/Crop instead of Track Motion to fly the text off the bottom of the screen. Pan/Crop will correctly mask the text once is has left the 16:9 crop frame.
