I have a comp that is taking forever to render. The comp is 3d, has particles, motion blur, camera wiggle, and is 5 minutes long – thus the long render. I had it rendering for 2 and a half days and then the external drive that I was using got bumped and it disconnected, so I lost the render. I’m about to restart, but I’m wondering if there is anything I can do to make it render faster.

Does it make a difference whether I render to a local drive as opposed to an external? Here are my current memory settings: https://d.pr/i/8a1l

Also, if I use Adobe Media Encoder to render rather than rendering right from After Effects, does that make any difference?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Commenting on how to make your render faster is too complicated a thing without getting deep into your project. I will say this.

    – Don’t render to an external drive, just a bad idea for many reasons, one of which you experienced.

    – I’d render an image sequence rather than a movie. That way if it crashes you can resume your render where it failed.

    – Try this script for BG rendering
