    I have a composition that’s 1280 x 720 HDV at 29.97fps.

I need to render this out as PAL 720×576 widescreen.

In my render settings I have it set to 25fps with field render OFF.

Output Module I have ‘Stretch’ to PAL/Widescreen and Compressor as Microsoft DV – Video for Windows.

It renders out fine and the aspect is fine but when there is animation happening such as a box moving from left to right on the screen, the image has a flicker similar to the flicker you see in movies shot at 24fps when the camera pans around.

I tried to fix this by switching on frame render and lower field first (for DV) which caused artifacting and the picture breaking up during animation. Same when I selected upper field first.

Basically, have I done everything right? Why am I not getting smooth moves during pans and animation in my composition when it renders out?

I am playing this back looking at it on a CRT via firewire. All my other footage looks fine except for this particular AE composition.

I am also playing this back via Sony Vegas on a PAL/Widescreen timeline where other projects playback fine. So the problem isn’t within Vegas.

    Any help is appreciated.

I suggest that you first render out the 720 comp as is, ie as 720. This is to allow you to check the integrity of your composition. Simply render a subset of the comp especially where artifacting may occur.

Should that render do well and you are assured of the composition’s integrity, then proceed to nest the 720 comp into a PAL widescreen comp. Apply the fit to comp command on this nested comp.

    Then render out.

What you originally did, that is to use the output module to resize is not advisable, especially when you are dealing with a field render or have interlaced sources. The artifacting, I’m guessing is due to field mush, an artefact that occurs when fields are mushed together or the field ordering is reversed.

    It worked!

Putting the comp in a PAL/Widescreen comp and rendering out with lower field first worked.

I’m on a deadline and this was killing me.

I’m so happy – Thank you very much.
