Render Problem
Hey guys,
I’ve just bought a Mac Book Pro, and Final Cut Studio 2. When I import a .mov file into FCP it always asks for render, both audio & video, even though I have my proyect settings equal to the .mov file, so every time I mark my in and out material, to see it I have to render it first, making the process very slow and annoying.

Hi Lalo,
In FC6 when you bring a clip to an empty sequence is asks you if you want to set the sequence with the same setting of the clip. If you say yes when you lay your clip you don’t need any rendering.
So when you select “yes”, do you need to render?

Exactly, even though I enter yes, it still ask me for render.
Do you know what may be causing the problem?

I have no idea why FC is doing like that.
What kind of footage are you working with?

The file format is a simple .mov
But I’ve tried with other .mov’s and still it ask for render.
The strange thing is that when I import a .avi, it works just fine! -

I guess your footage is .mov, but what codec and what size?
You my be not getting the red line, but AVI must always to be rendered.

Well but that’s just the thing, at least I can preview what I’m editing with the .avi example.
My .mov’s have different codecs and sizes, one was a .mov downloaded from theartofthetitle.com and the other one was a trailer downloaded from apple.com
Still, it doesn’t let me preview it and ask for rendering, with an annoying dot as audio.
If you want I can check for it’s respective codecs and sizes.

Also, don’t know if it helps but everytime I open Final Cup Pro, a message pops up saying the following:
“EXTERNAL A/VUnable to locate the following external devices:
Apple FireWire NTSC (720 x 480)
Your system configuration may have changed, or you deck/camera may be disconnected or turned off.
Please chec your connections and click “Check Again” or click “Continue” to set external device selection to None.
(you have the checkbox to “Do Not Warn Again”)
Continue or Check Again”I’ve also checked the codec of the .mov I’m using, it’s H.264, frame size 734 x 304, Vid Rate 23.98 and it’s pixel aspect is square.

Hi Andres,
The sizes you are trying working with are off standard. Also the kind of codec can cause you but problems. H264 is a format for delivery, no for editing. You are lucky that FC is not simply crashing.
Convert your files in something that FC can work with.
About the message you get when opening, don’t worry. This is because you have FC set to preview by FireWire and the FW device is not connected. Just check “Don’t warn next time”.

Well I’ve exported a .mov from After Effects using Animation compressor and it imported and played it back perfectly, but the odd thing is that before I’ve read you’re reply, I’ve tryed this FC on another Mac and it had the same error, although perhaps it was due to it’s file’s codec as well.

Hi Lalo,
Animation is not a codec supported for RT in FC, but even with Animation you don’t need to render when all the parameters of the clip and the sequence are the same.
I have no idea what can be going on. I will try to ask directly to some body in the forum.
