[Keith Larsen] “Has anyone had a problem with render files automatically trashing themselves each time a project is re-opened? I’m using FCP 5.1.1 with OS X.4.7”

Check to make sure there is not any prefs from an older version of FCP rescue.

This may be related to having a set of preferences from an old version, but where are your “Scratch Disks” designated under “System Settings?” Maybe your render files are going to the worng place.
