Can anyone help me understand more fully the purpose of the render cache. Is is only to optimize files for playback, like using optimized media in FCPX, or, are the cached files ALSO used for any final renders within Resolve?

Also, which codec(s) are most CPU friendly for a 2 yr old iMac?

The latest Manila for the DaVinci Resolve 11 b2 has a very detailed description of how render cache works.
Regarding the final renders — in the delivery page there is an option to use rendered images for final render.
