    Hello Creative Cow Community,

I have recently tried chroma keying in After Effects 6.5, removing a background that is not a solid color (i.e., a living room with many different colors tied in) and have come very close to successfully creating a crop without the hassle of rotoscoping the talent/foreground. The only problem is “edge flicker”. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to suppress the flickering? I have applied a matte choker with an edge blur and edge feather, denoisers or a combination of these filters to no avail. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time.

    Sincerely,

You could try a pass of Remove Grain before applying the key. Usually the jittering edges are a result of amplified noise or grain in the image.

If you’re worried about losing image detail in the denoised foreground, you could actually use the result from the key as a track matte to the original footage. That way you pull the matte from the denoised footage, without losing any foreground detail.

Thanks Bar3nd for the tip. I tried out your suggestion and the result did decrease the amount of flickering. Are there any other suggestions that I could apply to further decrease the amount of flickering on the chroma key? Thanks for your quick and concise respose. It was a great help.

    Sincerely,
