  • Remove a waving flag (ping-pong movement) from a footage

Guys, I need help! Can you please describe an algorhythm and name the instruments of removing an object which is moving in a ping-pong style in a footage which is moving itself (handheld camera).

Here I have a footage from a dancers’ contest. The cameraman shooting this video is camera-tracking a contester. So the camera is constantly moving mostly in a horizontal direction. There are some minor rotations (the horizon may wave) since it’s a handheld camera. In this footage there’s a spectator in the first raw of seats waving a flag from left to right throughout the whole performance.

The task is to completely remove this person and the flag.

    What I tried:

    1) Motion tracking the motion using two points to track the rotation as well. It failed – the AE tracker is always loosing the track so I fear I’ have to track it manually. Then I’ll replace a photoshopped reference frame with a content-aware tool to remove most of the flag. The rest like part of the flag crossing the dancer I’ll have to figure out later. I’ve stuck at the tracking part so far.

    2) Tracking the camera, parent the result to a null and place a photoshopped masked frame above.

    3) No more ideas.

Maybe there are better ways, be my guests. But please DESCRIBE your solution step by step, the more details the better.

Mask out the flag and then use Content Aware Fill. See how well it does with the removal.

Thanx, I figured out this solution myself and it’s next to impossible since there’re about 1500 frames to put a mask on… Masking in Mocha or AE doesn’t do the job because of the footage quality…
