  • Relogging P2 Footage?

Posted by David Green on January 6, 2009 at 6:28 am

    Hi,

I have been shooting a show where we have been importing P2 footage via the log and transfer window in FCP (along with a direct P2 card backup to a separate drive). This leaves us with the raw P2 data on one drive, and the Quicktime coded files on a separate drive.

Because we are filming, and I don’t have time to properly log and title the footage, the clips are kept with their native file names (0001EJ.mov for example).

My question is: is there a way to go back into FCP and re-log all of the footage? I want to be able to look through my footage, and log it by name, add notes, etc. However, I don’t want to re-transcode all of the P2 data over to Quicktime again, as this would take up valuable storage space…I just want to rename, log, and review the existing footage. Is there an easy way to do this, short of double clicking on each file in the bin, opening it up, and renaming it manually?

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Opening the clips from the Browser into the Viewer to watch them, and then renaming them in the Browser is the way to do it. Then you can either use the RENAME option in FCP to make the QT file names match, or leave them alone. If you RENAME them, they will reimport…if that worries you.

Ok thanks for the help. I’m assuming this means there’s no easy way to do it, in an easy interface window where I can enter the different fields that are in the log and transfer window (for example: notes, scene, take, good checkbox). You’re saying I’ll have to rename each file individually in the browser, by then scrolling right (in list view) to the other fields to enter such info?

It all has to be done by hand now, in other words?

    Thanks again.

Ah, this is where p2 metadata will allow just the functionality you need.

What format are you shooting? DVCPro HD? AVC-I?

Check this out and if you have further questions, please write back:

[David Green] “I’m assuming this means there’s no easy way to do it, in an easy interface window where I can enter the different fields that are in the log and transfer window”

This does not exist in any NLE that I am familiar with. After you capture the footage, you need to change the information in the browser window.

    Yes.

I don’t understand this statement. If you had your logging window, you’d still be doing tis by hand, wouldn’t you?
