Relink problems + Crashing
I’m an editor who has been handed a simple MC5 project which I am using as an reason to play with the MC5 trial (on Mac OSX 10.6.4). I have not touched Media Composer since the early 2000’s.
I’ve been trying to reconnect offline audio media (.wav) using the relink function in MC5. I’ve been trying to follow the manual, but I keep getting an unable to relink dialog no matter what parameters I try, and every other time I try to relink MC (5.03) crashes.
It’s frustrating because it takes MC a minute or so to startup (is this normal?).
I’m only trying to relink one audio file at a time in a bin because if I select all the offline audio files (40 or so) and try to relink, MC5 crashes every time.
Any suggestions?

When you open the Media Tool, is the audio media there (before relinking).

No. I’m used to FCP relinking where I just point the reconnect dialog at the right folder and everything connects automatically. So, I am confused as to how to get AVID to see the correct source folders…

Relink works when the media is being managed and in the Avid MediaFiles folder or OMFI MediaFiles. What you are looking for is “Batch Import”. Select clip(s) in bin and connect that way.

Ah, thanks. Though none the naming of the audio files in the audio bin matches the audio file names I was given as source. I thought that AVID had a database structure that tracked this sort of thing.
Am I out of luck?

Looking through the bin, I see that the audio source files on disk have a name from the audio bin TapeID column. Does this make any sense to you?

Yes, that is one of the areas where some metadata is retained. If these are the same bins used from the original import, do the batch import process.

OK, makes sense. Unfortunately, there are 100 audio files in the bin that have been sub-clipped and renamed from 58 source files on disk. Batch Import can’t auto-find the source clips and so I have to reconnect each bin file individually. A PITA.

Do you not have the bin with the original master clips from the original import? If not you can always go to “set bin display” and select “show reference files” and click off all the other clip types except for master clips. This will show you the original master clips before all the subclipping and syncing occured.

Setting the bin display in the way you describe leaves the bin empty. If I then add sources to the bin display I can see the source files, but not if I turn off master clips.
Does this mean that the link between the subclips and the source has been broken somehow? Or is there a way to regenerate master clips/source links?
Is there a website or some part of the manual that systematically explains how AVID media management works?

You want to keep “master clispps” on when doing this process.
The manual for Bin Menu and set bin display should describe this in more detail.
