    Hi everyone.

I’m about to purchase some upgrades, and I’m wondering what source you guys are using for your gear.

B&H I’ve used before, but I came across avalive.com recently which looks to be cheaper all around. Any other options or ideas?

    Thanks,
    Bjarki

Now the answer all depends on what type of upgrades. If you can provide more info, we can provide a better answer.

Right you are. My next acquisitions are items I’ll be using to upgrade a Mac Pro to a functioning suite.

A Kona LHi card, I’m interested in a couple of Euphonix controllers, a Mackie Big Knob or comparable controller, potentially a pair of audio monitors (I do have a spare set of M-Audio which are alright, but I’m a sucker for the Mackies.

These are all fairly general items and available widely. Are you guys familiar with AValive.com?

I don’t purchase much gear online and I definitely don’t purchase from necessarily the cheapest option. I purchase 95% of my equipment from the WH Platts company here in Atlanta. They’re a VAR whole covers not only non-linear editing systems but all things audio / video / sound design related from independents like me to major film and broadcast studios.

Because I’ve purchased from them for over 6 years, we’ve developed a relationship that I would never get from an online discount retailer. I can call them anytime and simply ask for advice or invite them over for coffee so we can discuss my future needs. Most importantly, if I have an issue with anything that was ordered they handle it, I don’t.

The best part is, very often their prices are the same or sometimes even better than those online discounters. Yes, there are times when I will pay more to go through Platts, but to me it’s worth it to have that one on one service.

whplatts.com and my rep here in Atlanta in David Strupp (pronounced Stroop). They cover the entire East Coast of the U.S. and have also delivered systems throughout the U.S.

Well, I just don’t have that option, Walter. I’m in Iceland. I don’t have a local one-stop-shop, and even if I did, I’d still look around to make sure their prices are competetive. Generally when I buy something I’ve already decided what to get and how to set it up, so what I rally want is the best price.

Sure, it’d be nice to have them over for coffee, but at the end of the day, that’s not what I need. I’m looking to find an online reseller that I can trust and give me a good price.

    Thanks for your input!

I have to agree with Walter but then I have a great working relationship with a VAR here in Nashville.
I have ordered online and experiences vary.
    I like OWC
    https://www.macsales.com/
    and Safe harbor
    https://www.sharbor.com/

Not necessarily the cheapest, but knowledgeable and fair

Last year I spent about +120K buying from BH, they are impersonal but they get the job done. I would reccomend them but dont expect a white glove service.

For MAC stuff locally I shop from https://www.mbsdirect.com in Maryland. I just updated all my suites with a total of 28 workstations and they were great. I dont know if they can help you in Iceland?

I DO NOT BUY FROM ADORAMA. Bad experience….

Well since you don’t have a local VAR, my only advice would be to avoid B&H unless you absolutely have to use them. I had two bad experiences in a row with them and have never gone back. Heaven help you if you actually have to return something to them…..

    Hello Bjarki

I look after the European business for AJA.

Feel free to drop me an email on:

    matty@phosphor.pro

I will hook you up with a suitable European reseller who will help you with the integration and shipping to Iceland. You are better off having a system sepc’d and supported in the same continent and timezone.

    Best regards

    Hi Matthew!

Thanks, I’ll be in touch – I think we spoke while I worked as a Pro Video Consultant for Apple here in Iceland.

I decided to order the LHi through AValive.com and it was delivered yesterday.

    Thanks,
    Bjarki
