Relative Path and reconnecting Media in FCP
Can anyone please help me, I come here often and you guys are always so helpful and i appreciate it very much.
Can anyone tell me what the “relative path” is in FCP. I’m running FCP 7 and am trading sequences with my co-worker. Every time i give him a new sequence i have to reconnect the media in groups. I have to do this because FCP is looking for the drive the media is on. Is there any way to make FCP just look for the file name, or is this a ridiculous question? I see that there is a search with relative path box that is usually checked and i wasn’t sure if that might help. I’m just getting tired of reconnecting this media when i feel like there is a solution around this, especially if feature movies are being edited in FCP, this has to be a problem that has been addressed in the past.
I appreciate any help you might be able to give.

As I see you have figured out, Final Cut is not great at media management. After awhile you learn its quirks and work around them the best you can.
The reconnect in relative path option works to a point and is good to always leave on when trying to connect a large amount of files. But issues do arise. What I have done in the past when sharing a large project with more than one editor is dupe the Master Drive, and on the clones have a NOT SYNCED folder for the assistant editor to put their stuff they work on in and then consolidate back to the Master folders when needed and then clone again so everyone has the most recent files. So when Final Cut opens a project on the clone drive, for the most part (minus some renders) it should reconnect the media pretty easily as the folder structure matches the Master Drive.
This is a very simple answer to a very complex question just to get you started. I highly recommend you pick up Shane’s Final Cut organizing DVD (it’s a fantastic resource for a good foundation in how Final Cut handles media) and also search a little more around here about sharing files with more than editor.

The path is relative as a relationship to the project.
If you had the project and media in one folder, and moved the folder, everything is RELATIVELY in the same places; final cut pro will have no reconnection problems. If you see the reconnect and deal with one file – and the structure of everything else has stayed the same, then everything will reconnect.
In your System Setup – FCP has prebuilt “Search Folders”. Target your folders that your copying your media to – this should help.
