Region of Interest
Posted by Charley King on May 18, 2005 at 4:38 pmHi Guys, it’s me again.
I swear I’m gonna master this thing. I made my first composition, and was very proud of myself. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.Anyhow I marked off a Region so I could get up close and personal with it. When I expand the view that region moves off screen. How do I get the region I am wanting to see big and close to center in the expanded view.
Thank you

The “Region of Interest” feature is to allow you to work within a specified ‘region’. Thus, having AE process, only, the pixels within the specified region; resulting in speedier screen previews.Should you ever want to zoom into an area within the Composition Window, you can do so using the Zoom (Magnifying Glass) tool. Just click towards the top-left of the region/area and then, with the mouse button still depresssed, drag towards the bottom-right of the region/area you would like to zoom into.
Should you ever want to navigate, without affecting any layer within the Composition/Timneline Window, just switch to the Hand Tool, and click and drag as required.

May 18, 2005 at 5:10 pmA spiffy way to get the hand is to hold down the spacebar. Release it to go back to your last tool.
You can also temporarily switch tools by holding down the relevant shortcut key, then releasing when done.

May 19, 2005 at 12:55 amHi Steve,
I am running AE 6.5 on a PC. I know almost all the key shortcuts that you normally use.
Since you mentioned about holding down the spacebar for the hand tool, I am wondering
why I cannot grab the the comp window whereas if I hit the H, then I can. I also use
PS and I love the spacebar for the grab but for some reason, I can’t do the same in AE.Thanks
P.S. this is not such a big deal but I’m just curious.

May 19, 2005 at 1:06 amOn 6.5 Windows, If I hold down the spacebar, the hand appears and I can use it to grab and move around the comp view. Not sure why yours doesn’t work …
Hope that helps,

May 19, 2005 at 1:20 amHi Steve, thanks for the quick reply.
As I said, I can select the hand tool hitting H., but it would be more convenient to do
as you suggested. However, I just tried it again; holding down the spacebar and I get the
hand but as soon as I left click, it changes to the V mode(arrow) and it moves the layer
instead of the entire area. I’d like to add that I’ve used AE for more than 2 years now
and I am pretty familiar with all aspects of the program. I do alot of camera work in 3d
mode for an animation studio in addition to effects, so this hand tool would be very handy.
Perhaps it’s the keyboard that I am using (it’s a dual language keyboard). Thanks for your help as always.
