Refurb or new Mac Pro? Direct comparison.
From searching the COW archive, I see many recommend that a refurb might be a wiser purchase than the latest model, particularly with regards to ‘significant’ cost savings outweighing ‘minor’ performance boost in the latest model.
So I’m very interested in your thoughts on this direct comparison of identically priced Mac Pros, from the UK Apple site – i.e. they are both currently £2,499.
REFURB
Mac Pro 8-Core
Two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors
2GB (2x 1GB) of 800MHz DDR2 ECC DIMM
500GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7200-rpm hard drive
Two 16x SuperDrives (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB (two dual-link DVI ports)NEW
Mac Pro 8-Core
Two 2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem” processors
6GB (six 1GB) of 1066MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM
640GB hard drive 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
18x double-layer SuperDrive
NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 with 512MBI understand that memory upgrades are a lot cheaper for the refurb, and the new model can only use identical monitors(?), but other than that, is the refurb a ‘no-brainer’ good deal? And can’t help asking if it is noisy at all, as that would really put me off. For use with Final Cut Studio, naturally.
