Reference Movie 1:1 export time to project length ratio???
Something’s off, but I haven’t been able to find it. I have a fully rendered sequence (about 2 hrs). Now, I want to create a reference movie for compressor to work on.
When I go, “export quicktime movie” and un-check “make movie self contained”, select dvdsp markers, and hit submit, the dialogue box and progress bar indicate my export will take about 2 hrs. At about 12% completed, the file size is already about a gig.
The last sequence I exported this way (that is now being network encoded by 3 other machines not including this one) first did the same thing as the sequence I’m currently trying to export… It took the better part of 2 hours, then gave me an error message saying that the file is too big (it was about 20Gigs on a NAS with 460 some-odd gigs available).
Upon receiving the error message, I deleted the associated QT file (assuming that it was incomplete). I went back into FCP, selected all the clips in the timeline, hit Command R. The progress window flashed for a split second (indicating everything was rendered). I tried, again, to export a reference movie. This time it only took about 10 minutes, and the file is now being worked in Compressor.
So…what’s going on? What am I missing? I’ve looked for the render files associated with my various sequences and it looks like they’re all there (besides, all the sequences are rendered and trying to render them only produces a result indicating they are already rendered). However, despite these sequences all, supposedly, having render files associated with them my attempts to export reference movies yield results similar to if I exported self-contained (in terms of time invested, anyway).
Thoughts, comments, questions, concerns?

If you export an rendered sequence “Using current settings” it should only take a few minutes even if the movie is a couple of hours. If you export using anything else FCP will re-render everything even though the sequence is already rendered. This takes forever to export. Maybe this is what’s happening to you.

I should have included that I do have the export settings set to “Current Settings”

Check Sequence>>Render All and make certain all of the possible renders, especially “Preview” & “All” and are checked, then re-render.
Next, report back and tell us what happens…

Ok. I just went into FCP and under “All” everything was checked but under “Selection” it wasn’t. So, I checked them all off and am re-rendering. In the timeline window, the section above my clips that indicates parts that are in need of rendering remained completely grey and command R only produced the expected “flash” of a progress window.
I am, again, attempting to export it as a reference movie and, again, I have what appears to be a 2 hour wait ahead of me.
Another interesting note is that the sequence that was being encoded when I wrote the last post produced some interesting results in dvdsp… when I imported it and simulated it, large portions of the video clips had rendered to pure white…while others were normal…
I’ve never seen anything like it before…

Ok. another sequence just errored-out saying that the file was “too big”…I can’t imagine what it was “too big” for considering: A – it was a reference movie and B: there’s over 460 GB available on the NAS it’s writing to.
So, whatever, after that errored-out, I quit FCP and trashed the com.apple.RegFinalCutPro.plist and the com.apple.RegFinalCutStudio.plist files, restarted FCP went to re-export the same sequence and…same thing… “About 2 hours remaining”.
I’m lost…

Ok. I just trashed all of my prefs but FCP is still doing the same thing… It’s as if the program knows that there’s render files associated with the timeline (because it plays back without needing to render) but when I go to export it, it’s as if those render files don’t exist.
Most of the render files were created during auto-render. I’m not sure if that has anything to do with the problem, but I think I’m going to trash all the render files and re-render the sequences and see if that does anything.

I’ve been having similar problems. I’m not getting errors, but it is rerendering everything when I try to export, reference or self contained.
I’m starting to wonder if it’s my xdcam timeline set to render prores that is causing the issue.
I’d love to know if you solve this.
