REEL-TIME: Where to start to get real-time in Resolve?
Posted by Christian Mathis on September 24, 2012 at 1:41 pmHey
I wanna get a better performance on my grading station. After one or two nodes my system is on 15-18fps which is a bit of a pain.(HD 422 Material). To get real time I render it out and loose a lot of time.I’ve got a:
Mac Pro 3.1
8x 2.8Ghz
6GB Ram
GT 120 and Quadro 4000
4x2TB Green -7200 rmp
Black Magic Intensity Pro
Resolve 8.2Would it help a lot if I would buy fast SSD 512GB for a project to get real-time or is it a Ram thing.
What could help?
Thanks

September 24, 2012 at 1:53 pmYou can Test your disk speed , but I think you will get around 350 easy .
Your CPU is fine, more memory is good but doesn’t change much.
You need one or more powerful GPU boards.
A cheap GTX 470 will double what you have now.
A powerful 580 will triple it .
4 580 GTX will give you 12 ! times more power .
It’s totally scalable , you decide according to you budget .
Without at least one 580 or three Quadro 4000 in a Zcubix professional grading is hardly possible.A slice of color…

September 24, 2012 at 9:08 pmHaving a bit better MacPro 16GB RAM with quadro 4800 instead of quadro 4000, but faster RAID, I can work 2K DPX no problem (Prores422 running smoothly), but not with complex grading. few nodes, than proxy, after few more you need to render for realtime.
I am getting Cubix soon, but not sure what to put inside. Sashca would you consider GTX 580 still to be good buy in this time? Or to hold few months and wait better cards?Cheers!

September 26, 2012 at 5:33 amA Mac based Resolve is limited to 3 GPUs. A system with 4 GTX580s will be a system with one of those GTX580s not being used.

Thanks everyone for your help.
I still didn’t find a quick solution.
When I checked my disc speed with the BlackMagic Speed Test my Drive was at 110MB. What made me buy a SSD that has now 260MB/S but the improvement in Resolve is poor. When I play Alexa ProRes 4444 footage without even putting a Lut on it I get about 20fps.
Sasha is probably right to get RealTime I would need at least 2 GPU’s.Or is there something I can change on my system?
Thanks again

October 2, 2012 at 11:04 amWith a Mac Pro 3,1 you need to turn on 8-bit monitoring to get even close to 24fps and then you’re just on the edge with most formats. Unfortunately you’re looking at a new Mac for better performance. A new GPU will not help if you can’t play back at 24fps with no corrections. The Q4000 in a new Mac should be good for 3-4 nodes of realtime with ProRes on a newer Mac.

October 2, 2012 at 10:48 pmThanks for the advice. That saves me a lot of money for the moment. And I really hope that now that we have all these new connections (Thunderbolt and USB3) we get the MacPro6.000.
So for no I will work with proxies. And maybe the 64bit Version will help. But I’m still on the old System.
Thanks everyone

October 3, 2012 at 12:23 amChristian,
besides 8bit video out, I have also got better performance in V9, if turning OFF optimizied dispay during playback/preview, it is somwhere in settings as far as I remember under video preview, or in general settings of project (if you don’t find it, I can look for it tomorow). Also Resolve V9.0.1/OSX 10.8.2 / newest CUDA driver got me some bit better performance. I think you should get realtime Prores for sure out of your MacPro!Color grade reel: https://vimeo.com/15480583

October 3, 2012 at 12:08 pmHey Teo Rižnar
I’m still running on 10.6.8. As far as I know I can run the latest CUDA driver. This week I’ll update Resolve to v9.0.1.
Let’s see if this already brings something. Is there some out there with a happy working MacPro 3.1?
Thanks

October 4, 2012 at 11:58 pmI got 25fps with going to 8bit monitoring. I called Blackmagic and they sad that even if I would put more gpu on my Mac my cpu is too slow.
MacPro’s 3.1 and older aren’t ideal for colorgrading. There is something with the processor architecture that doesn’t work as good as the newer ones.Too bad. But till Christmas it will work that way.
