  • Reduce image size in After Effects to speed up render?

Posted by Dustin Parsons on September 17, 2015 at 5:40 pm

I have a project made mostly of images with a lot of effects on them to make it look like they’re moving in slow motion (pupped people to make it appear like they’re walking, added cloud moment to skies, lighting effects, etc…). The problem I have is the images are huge (12960×9035 px) and are taking a long time to render. Most of the images I’ve reduced to about 21% of their original size in After Effects for a 1080×1920 timeline so they don’t have to be that big. I tried resizing the images in Photoshop but that messes up the position and size relations (maybe because they’re 3D layers?) and puppet tool goes insane.

Is there any way to reduce my image size in After Effects to speed up the render time or do I have to resize every image, effect, precomp, etc…? Thanks!

It’s a 1 minute video. Took about 3 hours to render yesterday.

    Wouldn’t precomping and creating lower-res proxy’s help?

I’ll give it a shot. Haven’t used proxies for something like this yet
