redirect RAM
Posted by Jason Spencer on July 14, 2009 at 12:48 pmHi,
I am working on an indie feature on an iMac G5 on FCP 6.0.6.
First and foremost, the iMac only has 1.5GB of RAM… I understand that FCP needs at least 2GB to run smooth, but we have the computer loaned to us via the prod company, so we can’t upgrade the RAM, we need another solution. Is it possible to redirect/allocate more RAM to FCP? Any other clever solutions? I’d love to hear them!
Thanks.

July 14, 2009 at 1:50 pmMight seem like a silly post but make sure to quit out of everything when you’re working in FCP with that low amount of RAM. I would make sure to not even launch something like Dashboard or close out all “widgets” just in case. Don’t even have Safari or iTunes open when you’re editing to help with this problem. Close out of literally everything except FCP.
I’m not really sure about RAM allocation, but if you only have FCP open then you will only be allocating to FCP. -

July 14, 2009 at 2:15 pmYou can assign up to about 2.7 gigs of RAM to FCP, but it certainly has to actually be there… so the answer to your question about not adding it and get the benefit of it is no.

How do you ‘force’ assign RAM to FCP?Ernie Santella

July 14, 2009 at 2:33 pmI wouldn’t try to use any motion templates with that set up. I’ve edited in FCP on that same hardware without too much of the spinning beach ball of death, even with 15 layers of video with blend modes, etc. It’s possible, just stay completely away from motion templates; they won’t work well there. If you need to round trip to motion, here’s what worked for me. Place the motion project in the timeline. Edit in motion, then export the .mov at the same res as your sequence and replace it in the timeline. Best of luck with it; plan on plenty of time for coffee during render. 🙂

July 14, 2009 at 3:17 pmThese are all very helpful postings! Thanks. Steve, I’m also finding it hard to locate the memory & cache settings. Is it in System Preferences?

July 14, 2009 at 7:51 pmThanks Steve. I already knew about those settings in FCP, I was looking for some menu on the basic mac system settings for memory allocation to different programs. (There’s no setings for that)
