What is the best workflow for RED footage to Editorial to Effects to Davinci?
Is it worth to switch from FCP to Premiere to be able to edit R3D and skip transcodes?
And also be able to go straight from Premiere to After Effects back to Premiere with out rendering?

    Hi Brandon,

Even if you choose to edit in premiere rather than FCP I would still strongly recommend editing using transcoded proxies as although Premiere can handle R3Ds if the system it is on is good enough, the the amount of data you would have to read/access while watching the clips would be astronomical and you would also require a raid on which to store everything. A good editing suite using offline proxies can still be expected to crash once or twice a week, I would hate to imagine the number of additional crashes that would occur due to the added pressure on the system of using the R3Ds.

Basically unless you have a phenomenal machine you will save more time by transcoding and then efficiently editing the footage rather than editing the R3D and and having the editing process be slow and laborious.

I would recommend editing using the proxies and then use an AAF, EDL
or XML to relink the project to the original R3Ds after the picture lock.

    Hi.

You can do proxys in Resolve. And depending of your config it is fast.
Specially when you use half rez good option for red stuff.

I mostly do it like that. Import all or some of the material to media pool depending of the material length. If it is long and extends 20 minutes or so i split to “reels” just by importing
drive or memory card basis from camera.
Then go to slate tab and put some timecode and name options on.
Go to session and render out with original names to different folder. Proxys can be in the same folder
    when exporting from resolve.

WIth prorez it is really simple for editor to use same named files even on laptop.
Later you can reconnect in resolve with r3d files and only use media that is actually needed.
Make sure you have “ignore file extensions” turned on.

Later it is just the mater of re connecting to fcp and if any need you just go back change one or all files,
render them to same folder that you had for final output and bam you are reconnected in fcp.
Just be sure to delete files you plan to modify first. Have not tested how well overwrite works.
Also rendering out separate files is good idea for vfx work. It is really simple to just have one or two shots for vfx to work with.

Somebody may have different / better solution but this is what i have use with few
last jobs and it served me well.

I think there is really strong point not to oversaturate your machine with big r3d stuff when doing offline.
