Codecs are like craps tables in Vegas; there’s lots and lots of choices, but only a few good bets. Apple ProRes being about the best of all worlds… If you use it you can hardly go wrong, no matter what your original might be.
Learn how to transcode to ProRes and you will a happy camper. Apple Compressor has presets that automatically transcode to ProRes files that are exactly the same dimensions as your original.

Thanks so much david..just re-did settings..one weird thing though. the stock footage ‘item properties>format’ says compressor type JPG…so I set prefs to this, seems to work fine..:)

Just one thing to keep in mind Mark, the Photo JPEG codec is not recognized in FCP as a “realtime” codec, so you will be required to render a lot more with it than you would with others. Other than that, it’s a respectable codec that works on both Windows and Mac machines, hence the reason it is used by so many stock footage companies. It’s also one the very few codecs still in use with which the bitrate can be dialed down or dialed up to suit the needs of the user.
