  • RED (h) files for HDCAM sr layoff ?

I have been asked to put to tape some files which were created after media managing a fcp project – all that remains of the footage are these media managed (H) RED QT files – all the original R3D as well ProRes transcoded media have been wiped away and now they want whatever can be salvaged to be put to tape.

When i open them up in qt it says its:

REDCODE 1920×1080 & 1024×576 @ 23.98 so my question whether or not its ok to render out the sequence as ProRes hq and then lay to HDCAM sr at either 23.98 or 29.97 on the fly with blackmagic /fcp adding pulldown.

I know is not good practice or recommended but its literally all that remains of the footage!

would love to get some thoughts from people.

    cheers

    sean

the proxy files REQUIRE that the r3d files are still alive. Can you click on the H file and see picture?

    Hey Aaron
yes of course i see image in both QT and FCP and when i bring into a FCP sequence and render at pro Res hq it looks like it can indeed be layed off to tape.

again this is after a media manager job so its the only remaining footage from the project – others erased the media not me – and now i have to make the most of it – apparently the editor was cutting with the H proxy files and then the project was media managed so those are the only files that remain.

Ah, I see. Probably seems best to ProRes and put to tape. What you have is as good as it gets.

You could go to 10 bit uncompressed if your system can handle it.

Personally I find RED so noisy to begin with that ProResHQ is a beautiful fit.
