Red Conversion, rough time estimates.
Hey guys,
When doing a Red job, how much time do you tell the client it will take for transcoding the media? Assume it’s being done in Redrushes. I know this is highly dependent on the machine. Let’s pretend 3 different people have three different machines. An 8-core, a quad-core, and an i7 iMac.
Even though I’ve done this many times, I still seem to forget. I was going to allot the total number of hours recorded multiplied by 4.

You haven’t mentioned what sort of quality/debayer setting you will be transcoding to. This will make an enormous difference.
For conversions to a low-ish quality format suitable for offlining I’d say 4:1 sounds about right. Possibly slightly faster than that. If you use Clipfinder to do your conversions it tells you how many fps it is transcoding at.
