My studio took the plunge into Media Composer 6 after confirming that Avid FX could read RED 5 project files. I have run into a few issues, though.

    1. Avid FX can’t read RED 5 plugins on the timeline, so no changes or updates can be made unless there is a saved project file outside the Avid. So a RED 5 update is necessary.

    2. No imported .mov files or audio files work in AVID FX. So the limit of video tracks is stuck at 6 and must be read from the Avid timeline. Image sequences are a workaround, but hardly as good an option. Using audio is a big help when doing sophisticated projects. I understand this could take time to implement due to Win 64 issues. Will it happen?

Also, wondering about the coming BCC8 plugins for AVX. Really looking forward to the new stuff!

Boris, love the products immensely, they make our productions so much better. I’d just love some sort of timeline on when and if these things will come.

Are they NOT available already??? They are on the Boris site, but I didn’t actually look into whether or not they are specifically for avid.

Can anyone tell me if the new 64bit versions of RED and BCC will be able to open FX created w/ previous versions (in the avid timeline)???

I’m looking forward to making the jump to MC6 as well. I have a lot of old projects that need to get updated from time-to-time….and a lot of titles/graphics created w/ RED4 (and older) as well as older versions of BCC. It would really be shooting myself in the foot if all those old FX couldn’t be used w/ the newer versions.

    thanks

Yes, BCC8 will open any prior instances within Media Composer timeline. RED 5 should as well, but has yet to be updated to work within MC6 & it’s 64bit architecture – so no updating those files yet.

    Thanks Quincy.

When I updated to RED 4, I had to keep version 3 installed to open any old FX…I’m guessing I wont be able to install any older versions of RED into MC6 due to the jump to 64bit…so hopefully it’ll work. I guess I’ll have to hold off and see.

I’ll try to answer all questions in one post:

    – old Avid timelines with Avid FX should open fine with MC6 – AvidFX 6 combo, let us know if you see something strange

    – Avid timelines with RED 4 effects will not immediately open in Avid FX 6. We are working on a compatibility solution.

    – BCC 8 AVX is available for MC 6 – 64 bit now! Older Avids will be supported in near future.

AvidFx6 doesn’t work correctly with MC6. A lot of transitions gives diffuse images for incoming/outgoing clips. Some filters gives the same effect 🙁 I’ve tested it for about two days. My friend has the same problem.
I asked a few times at the Avid’s forums when Red 5 will be aviaiable for MC6, but never get any answer.

If you are on the Mac, make sure to run AvidFX 6.03 available as free download from our website:

    https://www.borisfx.com/updates/#null

if you are on windows, wait for a couple of days until we post the windows version.

RED 5 for Avid is in the works too.

I’m on the PC, so must wait.
Thank you for your fast answer. It is the first message from Boris I get.
Hope that AvidFx6 update and Red 5 will be sooner than later.
    All the best .

    Hi,

I think I understand what the problem is. Can you try something for us?

Please launch AvidFX 6 / RED 5 and go to Edit>Preferences … this will open the preferences window. Then in the preferences window, select the Preview tab and disable the “Render In Draft Mode” feature by unchecking the box. Then click the OK button and go back to the main Avid FX / RED interface. Then make sure to set the Comp window to Full, instead of Draft.

Please let me know if this solves the problem that you are seeing with the diffuse color.

    Thanks!

    Peter.
