Will Red 4 open Red 3 file in FCP 5.1.2? Is Red 4 backward compatible with 3?

    Thanks, Dave

It should open the file, but you will most likely have to open the file with Red 4 (point the file towards red 4) Because the name changes, you will have to open them manually….or at least I would think.

I would not uninstall Red 3 until you have finished any big projects etc.

I guess I should be a little clearer. I want the Red 3 Static generators created in FCP to be able to open in Red 4.

    Thanks, Dave

I really wish that I could help, alas I do not know FCP. I have asked for a FCP savvy moderator on this board, as to be honest, most questions come from FCP users.

    Sorry

As an experienced FCP user and Long time Boris user, the Boris Red 3 Generator gets over written when you install Boris Red 4. What are you trying to do? If you have made a custom presets in 3GL, you can move that outside your library browser (3GL). In Red 4, open the saved settings and resave them with preview images into the new library by choosing File>save project copy to library.

Red 4 didn’t overwrite Red 3 on my system. I was told by the sales department at Boris FX that 4 doesn’t read Red 3 files in FCP. They said you have to keep both Red 3 & 4 in the system.

ONLY the RED 3 Generator gets overwritten. Boris Red3GL and its Library Browser still exist.

I agree, pretty wacky not to be able to open what you created with RED3 with RED4. What I do is open the RED3 generator/filter and copy the tracks, then replace it with a RED4 generator/fitler and paste the tracks. So far everything gets transfered over.

We have several on going projects that would take about a two days of work to go in and replace all of these Red Static 3.0 to 4.0 graphics. I can’t bill the clients for this. I am looking into switching to something that has backwards compatibility, maybe I’ll start using Motion for all our graphics.
