  • Recreating an animation – bending a flat plane in 3D space

Posted by Dustin Parsons on March 26, 2012 at 11:11 pm

I’m trying to recreate the simple animation found here, but I can’t seem to get mine to look as good. The main problem I’m having is getting the outer skin layer to appear 3D because my 2D version just isn’t cutting it.

Is there a free plugin similar to ZaxWerks 3D Warps that can do this or another plugin that works better than the ZaxWerks one?

    Thanks!

For 3d distortion you can use FreeForm – comes bundled with AE.
Also, for 2d distortion, Mesh Warp is great.

A really easy way would be to use 3D stroke (or just plain stroke)and the bevel layer style. Here is a quick example project for you…

I found FreeForm in AE. Looks like it does what I was hoping it could but it is difficult to work with. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks Erik. I don’t have 3D stroke so I’ll give the regular stoke a shot.

Mettle has released Free Form 2 – faster and more powerful than the bundled version, and if you have a bit more to add to the budget you can jump up to FreeForm Pro, a lot faster and even more powerful. That will enable you to animate and add reflection, texture and displacement.
