I’ve recently used Stellar Phoenix to recover data from my hard drive, which was successful, but now the FCP project files won’t open, even if i force FCP to read it. It just gives me “Error: Wrong file type”.

The files that wont work are Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 files. Other files that work are Pro Tools HD, quicktime, JPGs etc..basically everything apart from the ones that I desperately need!

I’ve seen threads on other forums of people who have had the same problem, it wasnt resolved. Has anyone here had/heard of this problem?

I’ve tried appending the files with .fcp, that hasnt worked. I also tried “Type and Creator Changer” and “Quick Change” programs and set the TYPE to FCPF and the CREATOR to KeyG, still nothing..

Does the CREATOR and TYPE differ with different versions of final cut? the files were originally created on Final Cut Pro HD 4.5..

If anyone has experienced this or knows or someone who has had similar issues, any help would be very gladly recieved!

    Thanks,
    Joe

I seem to remember you could open up FCP files like they were folders by doing a “Show Package Contents” and in there would be xmls of your sequences and such. Doesn’t look like I can do that with FCP6 anymore, but maybe with your 4.5 projects you can???

We’ve had mixed results with this question over several years. The last successful story I recall involved using a file editor to compare the code of a good file with that of the bad file and attempting to copy and paste the missing elements between them. It wasn’t that difficult, IRRC, but it’s not something I’d do myself.

I do not mean to sound mean but this is whey god gave us Time machine and backup utilities.
