Record HDSDI output

Hi Paul,

HD SDI is still fairly expensive no matter where you look. The most reliable way would be using a digital or tape based deck. I would look around for a rental house and see what they are offering. For tape based recording, we like DVCPro HD. You could certainly look at Blackmagic or AJA and use any of their HDSDI cards for recording, but I wouldn’t rely on that as a single recorder, well I would never rely on a single recorder period.

On the laptop side, not much in the HDSDI area. If you could get a hold of a MacBookPro, there is this great AJA product.

I do have a a brand new macbook pro. Have you used this product first hand? Would a stock macbook pro with firewire be able to keep a sustained HD stream (2 hours plus) combined with the io pro?

It will, but not to uncompressed. It captures to ProRes, which may not be the solution you’re after since you are using Premiere. I used it a couple of times with FCP. I still would want to have some redundancy.

We are actually looking at buying one of these, that may be what you are after.

Actually I have posted the same question on the HPX camera forum as well and have been pointed in the direction of the Ki Pro. Also had some discussions on the Ki Pro forum as well.

I am pretty muched convinced it is the unit for me but I am looking for anyone to confirm that the prores codec for PC works well with CS4 Premier Pro. I will search the archives to see what users are saying.

The Ki Pro is an excellent product but is really aimed at Fcp. I would be very reluctant to edit Prores on a regular basis in Premiere.

I am currently looking through the archives to see if anyone is having problems with prores on CS4 PC. I havent found anything yet but am still looking. Maybe I will pose the question in a new thread.

Do you have first hand experiences with prores on PC?

I have edited using Prores(on a 10 minutes long project), and CS4 did crash a few times. I can’t say that it was caused by Prores with certainty, but I rarely saw any crashes in the 2 years we used CS4.

The performance wasn’t that great either, which is why I would hesitate investing in expensive hardware that provides a format that really hasn’t proven to be reliable in Premiere.

The reason you won’t find any posts on the subject is that most people don’t even know they can download a Prores codec for Windows.

Also keep in mind that you are depending on Apple for updates. If Adobe was to provide an update on their side that broke the functionality of the format, I imagine Apple wouldn’t rush in to fix it.

No reply on the new thread with regards to prores on PC. As you say, must not be a lot of people using it. I am certainly not interested in being the one to break new ground with untried codec.

sure is a sweet looking machine. I liked the idea of being able to record an SD downconvert simultaneously for quick client dub and backup.

Is there a PC equivelant that you are aware of. something with the recorder built in?

I will continue my research.

I still am not clear as to whether you are looking for an uncompressed capture solution, or simply a way to get from HDSDI to the MBP?

For the second option there are tons of converters that will do that, and you could easily record with Adobe OnLocation through firewire
