  • reconnect media to footage captured with “capture now”

    Hello,
I have captured footage originally with “capture now” and let FCP create files called file001, file002, etc. now that I find out about SDcam being able to transfer files directly into FCP at its original quality, I am about to rent a deck and import all the original files to have the best quality possible for my final version.

My question is : once I have all my footage in better quality (hence one offline quality one online quality) should I re-edit my whole project clip by clip using the EDL or can I just “reconnect media” even though my project was created with random names and random t=TC ins and outs. Of course it is very tidiest re-editing with the EDL doing one cut at a time but if it is the only way to garantee its going to be acurate, it’s worth the time but if I can just reconnect media it would save me at least a week’s work. Keep in mind that the new online master clips will be named differently, and will have different ins and outs BUT THE TIME CODES in my sequence are the same as the offline version.

Your input is VERY VALUABLE as I have about 40 days of editing done and 11 disks to recapture.

I don’t think there’s anything called SDCam. Do you mean XDcam? “Capture Now” still captures timecode. I’m guessing you ignored timecode breaks?

If so this is what you do. Re-capture all the tapes at full quality. Highlight one of your new captured clips in the Final Cut Browser, and select “Modify” at the top. Then choose “Timecode”. The tool is self-evident. You can change each clip’s timecode and reall name to match whatever your bad “Capture Now” clips are. Then you reconnect and you’re done. It doesn’t matter if the new clips have different durations, it will still work.

    Thanks so much Sean!

Yes it is the XDcam and with FCP 6 I can transfer files to their original captured quality… which is what I want. Yes capture now files have time code. I will have the deck Tuesday so obviously I can’t try now but I am trying to understand and make sure I will know what to do. Do you mean that I create subclips that have the same TC ins and outs and so if I do reconnect they will go get my new captured clips instead of my bad-quality ones? Should I delete my bad-quality ones first so it does not go get those?

    Thanks for taking the time!

You don’t need to make subclips. It’s simple, all you need is your new footage to have the same timecode as the old footage. If it already does, then great. If not, you can use “Modify Timecode” and change the TC of the new footage to match whatever the Timecode of the old footage is. Once the timecode is the same for both, you can reconnect to the new footage.

Hi Sean and whom ever could help

I have recaptured all footage using XDcam transfer so my new clips are the exact length of the takes. The first time I captured I used “capture now” for a length of about 10min. per clip. Now that I have my new footage, I tried highlighting an old clip and pressed “reconnect media” and I had to locate it myself in the folder that has my new footage BUT I new that that exact clip was clip #43 but I was hoping not to have to choose the exact clip for each media to reconnect. Can I just chose the folder and it will find it’s appropriate clip? I tried entering the correct folder but that seamed not to work. I have 10 off-line clips and I must have 300 new ones so you see my dilemma…

    Hope to have an answer
