Recommended Workflow for GH4 Footage
Posted by Terry Fein on June 3, 2014 at 5:06 pmI just got a GH4. I’m used to working with AVCHD clips from Sony cameras in Vegas Pro. I tried editing and rendering a very short clip from the GH4 last night in both Vegas Pro 12 and Vegas Pro 13. It was giving me fits, but I didn’t have a lot of time to experiment. Does anyone have a recommended workflow, including render settings?

I can play Panasonic GH4 24p C4K (4096×2160) footage at full frame rate (24.000) using Best(Full) with Vegas Pro 13.0 on my 8-Core Xeon E5462 2.88Ghz, 16GB RAM, 2TB RAID 0, and ATI Radeon HD 5870. Sony recommends at least an 8-core w/16GB RAM, and RAID 0 for 4K editing. What do you have?

June 4, 2014 at 1:53 amThanks, John. I have a quad-core with an Intel i7. I think I may have solved all the rendering issues I had last night, merely by turning off the GPU acceleration. I am, however, still having an issue when I drag the files (whether shot in MP4 or in .MOV) into the timeline. The video portion appears much longer than the actual clip, and the audio portion is much shorter.
What render settings would you recommend (both for 4K and for downscaling to 1080p)? In the past, I have generated MP4 files for playback on Vimeo/YouTube and burning to a Blu-Ray disc.
For downscaling to 1080p, is it simply a matter of matching the media properties, and then rendering in 1080p?

That’s already been reported by others. It appears to be a bug in Vegas Pro. I would report it to Sony so they see more people complaining.

Yea, it’s the same as rendering HD. Just use the MainConcept AVC Internet 1080p template. For 4K change the render template resolution to Custom and make it 4096×2160, change the frame rate to 24.000, and save it under a new name.

June 4, 2014 at 3:15 am…also, note that it is only the 24p frame rate that does this. 29.97 imports OK. I find I can quickly clean up the 24p files on the timeline by “double click”, “s” (split file), “delete”.

There is a free script that fixes this problem: https://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=897303
