What is your preferred video format for when working with overlays with an alpha channel?

Way back in the day, I would use Animation+ when exporting from After Effects. The past few years I’ve been using PNG+Alpha which helped with the file size. The PNG+Alpha just absolutely kills performance on my system when dropped into a Premiere Pro timeline. It was bearable when using for a lower third or a transition, but I’m now working on a project that has an overlay throughout the entire piece. To get any type of real-time viewing, I have to turn that layer off (has a yellow line when ON). I’m looking for an alternative format to use that may improve things.

Base projects are XDCAM-EX or PRORES. Overlay file is the same resolution as the project (1080). I can typically load up my layers with just about anything in Premiere and it will take it, but if I just throw the overlay over a single track, the system bogs down.

    Thanks.
