I think as far as the actual plasma display, they are the same. The pro has more options in the menus (color, gamma, 3:2 pulldown removal etc.) Also, I like the clean look of the pro version as opposed to the consumer version with speakers, bigger foot print, etc.

I highly recommend VisualApex.com I bought my 50 ” HD 8UK from them 2 years ago and other equipment just recently. They are fabulous and my plasma is awesome. Of course I paid $4000.00 for the same TV but thats technology and I have 2 years enjoyment out of it.

I use this plasma for TV viewing, as a computer monitor and game playing and there has been no issue whatsoever with burn in. I’d say its a non issue. Good luck with your purchase.

I’m considering buying one of thes 9UKs for a tradeshow but I’m undecided if I really need the 50 or to just go with the 42 and save 700.00

What? You’re not considering the 103″? I mean a true gaming affectionado would go for the 103″. Four player action and each person has the equivalent of their own 50″ plasma screen.

Who doesn’t have $70,000 to spend on a monitor? 🙂

[Borjis] “What would be considered an extended time that would burn in an image?”

Get in the habit of turning the plasma monitor off when you leave the room and don’t leave text and graphics frozen on-screen for hours at a time and you’ll be fine with the new generation plasmas. And, consider stretching SD to full-screen while cutting if you can bear looking at distorted block heads — its the letterboxing of SD that most often shows up first as burn in. Keep in mind that some colors burn in faster than others, with yellow being the worst offender. Panasonic has been working hard to make burn in less of a concern, so its not nearly the issue that it was in recent years.

[bob carpenter] “I’d say its a non issue.”

I wouldn’t, especially when it’s new. After watching 4:3 material on it for a while and then switching to 16:9 you can see right where the edge of the 4:3 image used to be marked by a pronounced line on either side. The left and right edges are then a little bit darker compared to the middle of the screen. It goes away after 16:9 material has been playing for a while, but it’s there and leads me to believe that if you left it on for a long while, it might not go away. If you are watching 16:9 content exclusively, you are right, a non issue. Unless you left it on for days with a non moving still graphic. There are built in options to minimize the burn in but you have to turn them on.

All I have to say is (again) read the manual or download it and search for after image. Read what Panasonic is telling you and you will be fine. Maybe I’m just being overly cautious, but I like to keep gear around for along time and take care of it.

You *might* be able to pick it up even closer too. When we purchased ours we chose the option for “local pickup” and they directed us to a shipping warehouse in Seattle (not any kind of a “dealership”, but a real shipping facility). They might have a similar warehouse in Portland. Who knows.

Very good point on that 100″ model Walter. (split screen 50″ for gaming)

thanks again for the replies its been VERY helpful.

probably going to go with that place up in seattle.
I’ll call them and see if they have a wharehouse in portland.

Interesting about the 4:3 viewing advice.
We typically only use our dell 24″ for HD viewing and I suspect more often than not we’ll use our sony pro crt for 4:3 though I know everyone is going to want the plasma on.

    one last thing
is it true that this unit will pillar box with gray colors on the sides instead of black?

Been reading the manual, It says you should never have a still image in 4:3 mode to avoid those lines on the sides as someone just pointed out. You get around it by adjusting the brightness of the pillars and using the screensaver.

any of you owners out there, would appreciate input from you on what you use for screensaver settings to prevent after images and burn in.

No no no, Four Times 50″ for gaming!!! The 103″ is equal to four 50″ screens in a quad formation. SERIOUS gaming monitor! Woo hooooooo!
