recapturing via KONA card versus upresing via tyranix
I’m working on a multi-formatted documentary and we are getting ready for our online editing.
we have a lot of DV footage and HDCAM footage that was originally captured over firewire with the plans of eventually bumping it up to 1080p/1080i.
we are definitely going to recapture our HDCAM footage, but my question is: is there any advantage to recapturing all of our DV footage in a cold room over KONA card rather than just bumping it up over tyranix?
we’re weighing our options and checking prices of both processes at the moment. if anyone has dealt with this in the past, i would love to hear your workflow and any snags that you experienced.

You can re-capture the DV footage via SDI through a Kona 2 or Kona 3 directly to 1080i, as long as it stays at the same frame rate- 29.97 to 29.97 or 25 to 25. If you need to change frame rates, then you need to run it through a Teranex or Ukon.
As for the quality, the best way to determine that is to run a test with the same footage going through both methods.
