recapture beta-sp via iohd – frame rate preset error
I’ve got a feature film shot on 35mm. Transferred to Beta-SP. Captured the Beta-SP tapes at DV quality in FCP to do the edit. Now I’d like to recapture the Beta-SP tapes through the IoHD to 720p 59.94 ProRes 422 HQ (IoHD won’t let me select 1080p 59.94 – why?) Here’s the main issue – when I go into Media Manager in FCP – I choose recompress, select Recompress media using: Aja IoHD 720p Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) and after choosing a save as location I get the infamous:
The frame rate of the preset chosen for recompression differs from the items in your selection. The preset’s frame rate will be ignored and the original frame rate if the items in your selection retained.
If I choose to accept this, what becomes of the footage captured? Am I setting this up correctly? Is there another method of recapturing to my sequence other than Media Manager that I should use?
I don’t understand the purpose of that error message – I have to believe it’s quite common to recapture footage at a different frame rate.I’ve seen a handful of posts regarding this issue, but have yet to find a solution that works for me. Thoughts? Thanks!

Why are you attempting to capture betaSP (SD) as ProRes HD? That won’t make the footage HD. That will make it blown up SD. And yes, the frame rate differs. 29.97 to 59.94. 30fps to 60fps.

I’m trying to create a sell-able/presentable version of my film. I guess the first question should have been – I have a feature film xferred to betaSP. Currently, I have a FCP sequence of that footage captured at DV quality. Would I be better off recapturing at 10bit SD or upres-ing it to HD? I have an IoHD.
Odds are this will be the best xfer I will get out of this footage – unless a tape to tape online becomes available, or a miracle occurs and I can retrieve my original 35mm negative. (story from hell…) Basically, I want to capture the best quality version via IoHD to push the film to distribs, etc…

Has any one made an offer on your film and asked for a 720P60 version of your film? I’d be kind of surprised to hear that they did. Most distributors would ask for a 1080P24 master. And many of them would reject a version that had obviously been bumped up from Beta.
Your best bet would be to try and retrieve your negative and take an EDL to a telecine session to get a 1080 transfer made.

You can’t capture as 10-bit SD…the IOHD does ProRes only. But Capturing to ProRes SD would be the best way to go. Blowing up the footage to HD will only make it look bad. Your tape is SD, so keep it SD. You gain nothing by going to HD.

It isn’t. This is an SD tape, stick to an SD capture.
