realtime feedback – am i going senile…?
ok, im using AE CS4 on an octocore macpro with 16 gigs of ram.
when i first installed (and for the first few months) i got real-time playback when i dragged an object or scrubbed the timeline.
for some reason, now i only get parked playhead and preview playback.
is there some secret setting keystroke i may have toggled or something?

you’ve probably inadvertently toggled off the ‘live update’ switch in the timeline.
