Really weird sync issue

This is my first post and it’s a doozy. I have a FCPS 2 sync issue. The footage was shot at DV-PAL 720×576, but when it was captured (using the same setting) and brought into the project timeline the video kept jumping out of sync! I have checked sequence settings, presets and easy setups and everything is correct for a DV-PAL project. When I checked the clip’s item properties it read as being a standard 720×576 clip, however, when I opened it in Quicktime straight from the capture scratch drive and opened the movie properties inspector I discovered that it was actually at the PAL square ratio of 768×576! Don’t know why, just is. I then changed the ratio to the standard 720×576 and saved the clip again. When I brought that into FCP it played fine in the viewer but looked a bit squashed, I dropped it onto the timeline and it was once again out of sync. I checked the clip’s format and now it reads as 675×576!!! Does anyone know anything about this or what I can do to fix it … I have recaptured the footage twice already with the same results … please help!!!

First, your footage appears to be correctly proportioned. Quicktime will show the size that makes your video appear correct on a square-pixel display.
The sync issue is separate. Are you using Unlimited RT? What do you mean by “jumping out of sync?” Does it go out of sync at cuts or dissolves or is it random? What are your system details and what are you using for scratch disks?

I have managed to recapture the footage into a fresh project and it appears to be okay. However, I’m still a bit confused as to what happened before. I’m using Final Cut Pro 6.0.3 on a MacBook Pro dual 2.33 and am capturing to Lacie external drives for scratch and storage. What I meant by “jumping out of sync” is that if I loaded the clip into the viewer and parked the playhead at a position it would appear okay, when I hit play it would appear to skip ahead and the first frame of playback would not match where I had parked the playhead… I did some additional searching and found that the ratios were all correct and so I figured that perhaps my timeline or sequence was corrupt, so I opened a fresh project and recaptured the footage for a third time and this time it seems to working fine. So I can only conclude that either my original timeline or project had been corrupted and the invisible deadline demons were having me on… thanks for responding and if you can think of anything else it could have been I’d love to hear it.
