Real Media Export

I’ve just upgraded my OS to 10.5.5 and FCP to 6.0.4 from an old rev. My usual method of exporting a realmedia file using quicktime conversion is now not an option – it doesn’t show up – same with sorenson squeeze v 4.5 , it’s not an option as a format. I’ve downloaded the real export plugin for mac but nothing has changed. Any advice would help to get the old tried and true workflow back up to where it was. Maybe I’m doing something wrong here.

Real died a terrible death many years ago but the corpse still quivers.
Contact Real. There’s a new player for OS10+ but I don’t know of any current encoder for Real.

so real media export is no longer an option in FCP 6 ?

Its not an option any where. Most websites are flv or mov now. H264 is a really nice compression, Im on a project now that requires a .mov at 320×240 400kbps which came out at 233mb and an flv of the same size was 225mb. Basically time to move with the times .rm is the way of the dodo, I did a search for you but I cant find anything that would convert on the mac. However I think you might have more luck finding a program for the PC.

Unfortunately we’re still tied into a realmedia server and thats what we deliver. Anyone else see if realmedia is an option under exporting using quicktime conversion ?

Then you need to talk to Real. You’re one of their last paying clients. Their solution will be a hardware encoder for PC.
I do not think there ever was a really Real exporter for FCP. It was most likely a third party codec. You probably got it with your support software package from Real.

I do not wish to make light of your situation but your company is w-a-y out of touch with reality. Even if you you have billions of legacy movies, you can transcode them to a more suitable codec with any of several automated encoders. It is worth looking into to make your firm’s media resources useful into the future.

Flash is the winner in the online distribution wars. Flash Player can run many different codecs and H.264 is turning out to be the winner. All you do is change the .mov extension to .flv.
