    Hi everybody,

neither the documentation nor a google search got any results: I’m looking for a way to read the current cursor position in After Effects. Since it is always displayed in the info-box I’m pretty sure that it must be possible to access in a script and/or expression.

My ultimate goal is to read the current cursor coordinates and create (by keyboard shortcut) a null-object at that position.

Any hints would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers, Michael

As far as I know, scripts and expressions have no access to that information.

Hi Dan, thanks for your reply.

That’s a pity but I guess we’ll have to live with it.

    All the best, Michael

I was just wondering what you would need that for..?
..depending on what you need, the “motion sketch” function could help you out?

    Hi Anders,

I often create simple 2D-animations where one layer or “card” animates into the comp, then another one flies out from behind the first one etc. One way to make the “appearing behind another card” part look fancy is to set up the final position of the 2nd card, then move the anchor point of the 2nd card to the middle of the 1st card. Now when you scale the 2nd card up from 0% to 100% it will also appear to move, so you have the combined effect of scale and movement.

Sorry if the explanation is a bit shaky.

Anyway, I thought there might be a way to automate the process with a script which creates a null at the current cursor coordinates and then parents the current card to the null and so on.

At the end of the day it’s not that big of a deal, but since we repeat these types of animation so often, I thought I would give the automation a shot.

    Cheers, Michael
