Reaaalllly Slow Render
Help! Final Cut is taking 30 minutes to render a 50 second video! What is going on?

What codec is the footage in question? What are the sequence settings? What machine are you using? How much RAM? How fast are the processors? What filters do you have on that clip?
All of these are factors…

It’s a quad 8600. It used to scream!
We upgraded 2MBs ram to 4MBs ram last month.
The internal hard drive has 50MB’s of space.

I don’t think it’s a 10 second spot.
Shane is right. Need a lot more info.
If this is unusual for your system, maybe your drive is getting full?
I think you mean GB opposed to MB. If you have 50MB left on your drive then this is clearly the culprit.
10 second vs. 30 second render times depend on so many different variables. Very easy for either one to take longer than the other.

I think you’re missing the satirical nature of Chris’s and Dave’s comments, which reference a model of Mac and a pace of rendering that likely predate your birth…

It’s Quicktime, H.264. Sequence is 1280×720, square pixels. 4GB of RAM, Processors are 2.66 GHz. No filters, just a few different layers of video. I’m on a 17″ MB Pro. It’s going crazy slow! Thanks for your help!

H.264 isn’t an editing codec. It is a recording and distribution codec. It is VERY processor intensive and a bear to edit with…as you see. H.264 footage needs to be converted to ProRes before you begin editing.
THAT is why your renders are taking forever.
Not this for future projects.

It might be because of the multiple layers.
I know H.264 takes a toll on rendering speed. Great codec, just takes a lot to make it work. Have you used this setting before without issues?
